It's hard to put into words what Whitney Jordan meant to us, and all the people who love her, because it doesn't feel real that she's gone. It's hard to think about the fact that we'll never see her in the garden, never see her riding down King Street, never see her at The Alley. But, Whitney isn't really gone, she's with us every time the sun shines, the wind blows, and birds sing. We celebrate all the good that Whitney brought and what she meant to us as a dedicated Compost Ranger.
Whitney was a wonderful, smart, strong and beautiful person. She was funny, sarcastic and independent. She was part of the family at The Alley, was a compost champion in the kitchen, and was a champion in the garden as well. Whitney was an incredibly effective Compost Ranger, making sure that everyone at The Alley knew exactly where to properly dispose of their food scraps. Composting is a smelly, dirty, and sweaty job, but it didn't deter Whitney one bit. Always one to tell it like it is, Whit had no reservations letting her co-workers know when their composting skills weren't hitting the mark. She was a force. She pedaled thousands of gallons (literally) worth of food waste to a nearby community garden while she oversaw The Alley's compost operation. Our trailers can fit four 5-gallon buckets, each weighing up to 20 lbs apiece, and Whit would pedal a full load - in the blistering Charleston heat - like it was nothing, barely breaking a sweat.
She packed so much life and energy into her skinny frame, and never once complained about rainy days. She just had a way with her sly, sarcastic wit that she always knew how to make you laugh. She realized the value of what anyone could do - no matter how different they were - and empowered them with support and unwavering passion.Whitney was a fun and loving person, who always had a genuinely positive attitude and she will forever be in our hearts. We can say with 100% confidence that they do compost in heaven, because Whitney is there to make sure it happens. We love you so much Whit! You will always be in our thoughts and prayers and you will be sorely missed but never, ever forgotten!
